11.08.2019 QUEST-2019 QUIZ COMPETITION ON “FUNDAMENTALS OF CHEMISTRY, ATOM, AND WHAT IS INSIDE THE ATOM”

We, at L N Charitable Trust, feel extremely gratified to have successfully held our 5th Annual Quiz Competition for Matriculation and CBSE schools yesterday, the 10th August, 2019. The topic of the Quiz program for this year was “FUNDAMENTALS OF CHEMISTRY, ATOM, AND WHAT IS INSIDE THE ATOM.” As this subject is introduced to the school students only at their higher secondary levels, we decided to get the students involved with this interesting subject at the middle school level itself. This should help the students in accelerated learning of advanced subjects.

Objective of our competitions is to encourage rural students seek knowledge, exhibit their talents and skills, and sharpen their competitive spirit.

We worked hard in contacting several schools in and around Tenkasi. We reached out to schools located as far as Sivakasi on the Northeast including Rajapalayam, Sankarankoil and Cheranmahadevi on the Southeast.

I compiled a 120-page E-book titled: “I WANT TO KNOW ABOUT … FUNDAMENTALS OF CHEMISTRY, ATOM, AND WHAT IS INSIDE THE ATOM” and gave this free of cost to the schools for helping their students prepare for the Quiz.

Actually, this competition was to be held on 10th November 2018. During that time, some 22 schools gave their consent to participate in the Quiz competition. However, we could not hold it as planned due to our urgent foreign travel and stay overseas for a long time. We promised to the schools that we would hold it as soon as we return back to India.

We were back in Tenkasi on 26th June 2019 and straightaway plunged into preparing for the Quiz competition as promised. However, only 12 schools reconfirmed their participation. The competition was held on Saturday, the 10th August 2019 at M K V K Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Tenkasi. Ten schools, 28 teams, 81 students actually participated in the Quiz Competition.

6 best teams from 6 different schools were chosen to participate in the Oral Quiz, after a preliminary, screening Written Quiz.

Bharat Vidya Mandir, Ilanji won the first prize of a cash award of Rs.3000

Bharat Montessori Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Ilanji won the second prize of a cash award of Rs.2250

Ten student participants and 3 teachers received a book as a Lucky Draw Prize.

Sri S. D. Srinivasan, District Education Officer, Tenkasi Education District and Sri

Retired Prof. Dr. Rajeswari, Former Principal, Sri Parasakthi College for Women, Courtallam delivered an interactive talk to the students on a variety of topics that could greatly benefit the children. We thank her for sparing her valuable time to join us during this Competition.

We congratulate all the schools and the children who participated in the Quiz Competition. Our congratulations to the winners too. Our best wishes to all these children who took interest in the subject and came forward to exhibit their competitive spirit. Our gratitude goes to M K V K Matric School for providing their facilities to conduct this Quiz in their premises and for their excellent cooperation.

We thank Sri Amma Bhagawan for taking us through a path of constant learning in life and helping the student community.

02.08.19 National Means Cum Merit Scholarship (NMMS)

NMMS is a Government of India Scholarship Scheme for helping meritorious poor students for higher studies. Students of Class 8, studying in Government and Government aided schools will have to go through a Test – MAT (Mental Aptitude Test) and SAT (Scientific Aptitude Test), and based on the individual’s performance and ranking in the order of merit, the Government of India awards a scholarship of Rs.1000 per month for 4 years during the time the student goes through class 9 to 12 so that he or she has an initial capital of Rs.48000 for higher studies when he or she is ready to go to a college.

In Tenkasi, a coaching was arranged through the efforts of the Block Education Officer, Mr. Mariappan during 2018. About 125 students participated in the 2 and half-months coaching. Weekend full day classes were conducted. All the participating students went through periodic testing. A pre-final test was arranged and based on the performance of the participating students 12 students were given a cash award of Rs.500 each by our L N Charitable Trust.

Of these 125 students, 25 students qualified to receive the Rs.1000 pm scholarship from Government of India. Our congratulations to the Qualifiers. Our congratulations to all the students who participated in the coaching too!

On Saturday, the 20th July, 2019 the NMMS team at Tenkasi had sincerely and right earnestly started the coaching for the NMMS Test to be conducted in November/December 2019. Mr. Mohan, a noble teacher from a government school at Ramanathapuram who had coached thousands of students for competitive exams initiated the coaching for the MAT part of NMMS. About 150 students are taking part in the coaching this year. There will be classes on all Saturdays and Sundays. A very dedicated team of teachers are involved in the coaching this year too.

We, at L N Charitable Trust, conducted a Book Review competition during October 2018 to encourage book reading habit. The competition was open to school teachers and B. Ed students. The teachers of Bharat Montessori Matriculation Higher Secondary School and Bharat Vidya Mandir participated overwhelming enthusiasm. Some 68 teachers participated in the competition. Mrs. R Uma from Bharat Montessori won the first prize of cash award of Rs.1000 and 7 other teachers won a cash award of Rs.200/- each. We congratulate all the participants and the winners for their enthusiastic support to our efforts towards promoting reading habits. We thank the Senior Principal, Principal, and the staff of Bharat for their support and encouragement. The prize distribution was held on Monday, the 22nd July 2019.

We are planning a similar competition among the students too in the months to come.

It is worthwhile pointing out that a small effort initiated by us during 2016 to encourage book reading habits among students, with the help of Public Library, Shencottai has borne fruits in a big way now. Book Review Competitions were held every month and prizes were awarded. We supported the initiative for the whole year of 2017. The competition received tremendous response from student participants. A number of college students and higher secondary school students had been participating in the competition. Thereafter, several requests started pouring in to the library from several writers for reviewing their books and now, even after two full years, the monthly book review competition is successfully going on at Shencottai Public Lilbrary. Thanks to the great enthusiasm of the librarian, Mr. Ramasamy in relentless pursuing the goal of taking the library to more people.Congratulations!

Books are great gifts. Give a gift to your loved ones today!

Free Spoken English Coaching Classes for government school children

I conducted free Spoken English coaching classes for children of class 7, 8 and 9 from the Government Higher Secondary School, Melagaram. Based on a screening aptitude test, we selected 31 students for the training. The children needed coaching on the basic English itself. I conducted nearly 30 sessions of one to one and half hour each every day, till 14th October, 2015, including the days during the term holidays. About 12 children dropped out of the coaching gradually, for various reasons. However, the remaining 19 children were really passionate about learning, though they lacked even the basic English language skills. It was really enlightening to me to understand their difficulties and help them come out of their shell and speak English. Of course, they have a long way to go. All these children were from the most backward section of the society and it was really gratifying to me to know that they could take so much interest in a language. They were very slow to learning but assiduously practised various techniques. They were sincere, dedicated and attentive. All of them have the potential to pick up the language effectively if the coaching can be continued for a year or so. I assured to continue the coaching next year too if they so wished. A small test was conducted on the final day for the participants. Prizes were awarded to those who were very regular in attendance and to those who performed well in the test. Mr.S.T.Srinivasan, Headmaster of the school gave away the prizes during the morning assembly session. I spoke to the school students about the general necessity of learning English language to help them remain competitive. I wish the children who participated in the coaching a bright future.

Poorna Chandran, or Poornam in short, has a rare dream wherein Lord Siva appears before him and offers to cure his acute stomach pain on a condition that Poornam meets with HIM in seven of HIS places. His stomach pain disappears instantly. The local astrologer cautions Poornam not to take Lord Siva's conditions lightly and suggests seven of HIS abodes along the river Tamirabarani, in the Southern Tamil Nadu in India. Thus begins Poornams journey into his life full of miracles, challenges, hurdles and achevements and most importantly, an uncommon meeting with LORD SIVA.

Poornam dies watching himself on the television, when an international news channel decide to tell his story to the world.

This book is a story of stories of people who came together for a shared destiny. "Did Lord Siva send HIS army of people in his life towards HIS purpose?" wonders Poornam.

The Print version of my new book of short stories titled: SHORT STORIES FOR SUCCESS FOR YOUNG READERS: A NEW LEXICON UNFOLDED was released on Saturday, the 11th January, 2014 in a function organized by my L.N.Charitable Trust, as part of its Second Anniversary celebrations of Sakthiy Music Academy, a unit of the Trust. Dr.Soorya Narayanan of Sri Paramakalyani College released the book and Mrs.M.Kanthimathi, the Senior Principal of Bharath Montessori Matric Higher Secondary School received the ...first copy.

The book contains 26 short stories taken from history, epics and folk-tales to represent one English alphabet and depicting one character or trait that helps one to succeed in life. I was influenced by Avvayar's Athichoodi to model this book.

The book will be ideal for children studying in 5th to 7th Standard and will greatly help them understand how certain character or trait had helped people in succeeding in life.

The book is priced at Rs.100 and those who wish to buy can contact on my e-mail: neelkant16@yahoo.com.
